When we feel like playing a slightly longer game, we just announce at the beginning that we are playing to 4 objectives (and have control of your capital) for the win. Our choice of 4 objectives, as the victory condition, is the same regardless if we have 3 ,4 or 5 players.
I think I have previously read some posts where some have played the game with the victory condition set at 5 objectives. But playing to "6 or 10 objectives" as you indicate, may seem a-bit excessive. Besides if you try to play the game to some high number like 7 or 8 objectives, I think you will find that such a player will win the game due to "global domination," before even getting close to reaching the "# of objectives" victory condition.
PS: You state if anyone has played to "10" objectives, but if not mistaken, there are only a total of 8 objectives on the game board. You may want to double-check your game, but I think you are in error.
