Having rewards for the winner is a good idea, but having the game remember specifically who you the human player is, I think became a mistake. Here I talk of the Major Cities, the Missiles, and the named continents. This hurts the flexibility of who you can play with and it creates the possibility of intractable imbalances. It some how also violates the sphere of the fantasy. As opposed to Khan Industries gaining power, Bob my neighbor gaining power makes less sense.

My take for RL would be that instead of using a players name they use a factions name. Although this brings up the possibility of creating factions that are more powerful, it allows the game to be played with different players. Like if you have a group of 8 gaming friends, at any given time that 3 - 5 of them can get together, the game can be played and yet it doesn't matter who had played previously as the rewards are given to a faction instead of a particular person.

The above would also apply to any other types of future "Persistent" board games. There is no need to reward a specific person in your play group when you can just as easily reward a character/race/team. In this way future plays by anyone can reap the benefits of prior games regardless of this being their first time playing or 20th time playing.
