A review, before I opened the box.

I am about to read the rules online for the 3rd or 4th time, just to make sure I know everything. My friend Bowser will probably arrive in 45 minutes and in 80 minutes, we will walk over to Ian's to meet him, Michael and Adam to begin our campaign. Within 105 minutes, we will open the box and start arguing about faction powers and star placement.

I'll explain back-story in a later post but I just want to get this out the way: I am motherfucking excited.

I'd like to review the game before we open it.

When you hit the front or back of the box, it makes a nice deep sound. The short sides make a lighter sound when struck with your hand. Lighter yet is the sound made by a longer side! Lightest of all is the sound made by the handle, though it's a bit quiet.

Frankly, I'd give this a 2 or 3/10 as a musical instrument. The sounds are too quiet and if you hit it harder, I'm fairly sure it'd soon break apart. A banana box is cheaper - pick up one from a supermarket for free! - and you can hit it with a drumstick for a few hours before it finally falls apart.

The risk legacy box is more visually interesting though. The little splatters around the 'graffiti' aren't particularly realistic but suggest the 'feeling' rather than 'actuality' of spray paint if you know what I mean. The colour variations within the letters, however, seem rather authentic.

The cover art is quite dynamic, with an unshaded portion on the left leading into shades, before morphing into colours and explosions. However, the stars and 'spray painted' 'legacy' capture the eye thanks to greater saturation.

The tag at the bottom - play it, change it, make it yours - works well to explain the premise if you don't know it already. I hope we see more games meriting this tag.

For the most part, the sides, top and bottom are uninteresting. BUT, repeated elements work well. Some legal jargon is boring but presumably essential. It seems that Hasbro only has offices in English-speaking countries. I'm surprised there's not one listed for Germany or mainland Europe.

The handle on the top makes it feel like a childish, throwaway game. Handles break, but that maybe fits in with the theme of this game. Feel like a big kid, scrawling on the board with a pen and carrying your games with a handle! Not that I ever actually did either of those things. But, hey, it's an ideal we can all aspire to, isn't it?

The sticker - "NOTE: What's done can never be undone." - is almost chilling and is a large part of the reason I was intent upon opening this in front of the group rather than doing so straight away and fingering the pieces and manual as I usually like to do. It's a statement that applies well to everything and one that again encapsulates the game well. Nice touch!

The back cover features stickers being rolled on by invisible hands and a pen writing on the board, just in case you didn't get the message. The graphic design is great, with shapes that closely resemble the rule-change spaces in the manual and sticker spaces on the board. A wonderful photo/art collage with almost invisible dividing lines. The little toys and open box look exciting!

I know they say to not judge something by it's cover, but I give this a 7/10 based on nothing other than the box.
