I’d like to suggest a few reasons for the negativity.
1. Bad experience as a child
This seems to be a very common comment, and one which I can relate to. Many don’t seem to have re-tried the game as an adult and so their idea of the game is based on misconceptions which are covered in the following points.

I think I have covered most of the reasons why I believe that Monopoly often has a bad reputation. However, if played correctly, with a good group, it has the potential to be an excellent game.

I think you nailed it. Most people have played Monopoly and most of those as children. Hence the negative perception of the game. The game is really not intended for kids even if it is simple enough for them. My wife thought she hated Monopoly, based on playing it as a kid, until I convinced her to play and showed her the strategy behind it. Now she enjoys playing it, even if it's not her favorite.
