Just a general rule of thumb for me: The "must-have-it-ness" of the Waves are in order of release. Wave 1 is more must have then 4 which is more must have then 8 etc.As far as the large terrain expansions go, I would buy them in this order:
Swarm (to me a better expansion than stand alone set)
Castle (doubles as road tiles)
Tundra
Jungle
D&D Master Set
Road
Lava
Marvel
