I played a game of Clue with some friends not too long ago (the original game, but that's no matter). We keep detailed notes of what has been asked for. When people's misinformation led me to accuse the wrong suspect, I was able to say, "I asked about X a couple of turns ago and no one passed me a card."

I was still out of the game, but at least the other players knew to throw that suggestion out.

I'll also point this out: lying about what cards you have only works if you're the only one at the table doing it. :)

Another way to address the cheating problem, similar to the method described by Darren above, is through indirect elimination.

Concerning a cheater specifically: It won’t help you eliminate the cards per se and you don’t need to make an accusation before learning that the person cheated, but it will certainly expose him/her. Instead of keeping track of cards that have been asked, I keep track of players that do not have the suggested cards(assuming they didn’t lie). Everyone ought to have the same number of cards and if more cards pertaining to that player have been eliminated, either I made a mistake, or he/she lied/cheated...

Luckily, there are control mechanisms in place to ensure mistakes are kept to a minimum.
